I don’t want your audience to listen to me
Why I use perception goggles, a smell cannon, jellybean tasting experiments and karaoke
I have a new speaker showreel
👀
If you haven’t been to one of my interactive, multisensory, experiment-filled talks, watch this short film to see what I do.
My new talks are all about typosensory perception. They’re packed with experiments designed to engage the audience’s curiosity.
The realisations that have most impact are the ones you make for yourself. So I don’t just tell you, I invite you to take part in experiments and make discoveries for yourself.
🔮
Weird stuff:
• Smell cannon (mood prediction game).
• 3D perception goggles (cognitive awareness demo).
• Buzzers (typosensory jeopardy game).
• Jellybeans (unconscious bias demonstration).
• Multisensory wine/fizzy drink tasting (segue from talks to social).
• Karaoke (after lunch energy boost).
• Personality analysis (end of day conversation starter).
🚀
Key points:
• Words are the interface between you and what you experience.
• Experience typosensory perception.
• Activate your cognitive awareness.
• Experience unconscious bias.
• Understand perceptual diversity to be a better communicator.
💥
Don’t just learn about the science, experience it.
Typosensory perception
👀
What the heck does ‘typosensory’ mean?
I was a graphic designer for 20 years. I’ve spent the last decade measuring how the appearance of words can transform what you feel, think, taste and do.
At first I was intrigued that there was very little research into this. You know about colour theory? But what about word-appearance-theory? There isn’t really even language for it. So I invented the word typosensory to describe what I investigate.
What do you think of the word? I’ve started to see other people using it, which makes me smile like a proud parent. Please let me know if you see it used anywhere? I’d love to gather up examples.
And I made a t-shirt, of course.

Podcast
I was delighted to be a guest on Radim Malinic’s Creativity for Sale podcast. He’s the talented designer and author behind books including the beautiful ‘Book of Ideas’ and ‘Mindful Creative’. He’s also been a friend since our first books jostled next to each other on bookshelves.
Lovely quote
☀️
“… the riveting Sarah Hyndman who taught me something extraordinary … how the shape of a letter can influence our senses of taste and smell, trigger emotions and memories, and even play tricks on our expectations and perception.”
